How Much to Tip Movers?

Updated 2026-05-23 · 2026 U.S. tipping standard

Tip movers $5–$10 per mover for a half-day job and $10–$20 each for a full day. For large or unusually difficult moves, a 10–20% tip on the total bill is the U.S. norm. Hand cash directly to each mover at the end of the job, after the work is done.

What's normal for movers?

  • Half-day move (≤ 4 hours): $5–$10 per mover.
  • Full-day move: $10–$20 per mover.
  • Long-distance or specialty move (piano, multiple flights): 10–20% of the total bill, split among the crew.
  • Tip each mover individually in cash at the end of the job.

When to tip more

  • Heavy items (pianos, gun safes, large appliances).
  • Many flights of stairs or a long carry from truck to door.
  • Extreme heat, rain, or snow during the move.
  • Crew packed and unpacked, not just loaded.

When a smaller tip is reasonable

  • Items were damaged or lost due to careless handling.
  • Crew was significantly late without warning.
  • Move was much shorter than estimated.

Worked example

For movers, the U.S. norm is a flat $10–$20 per mover (full day), not a percentage. Tip in cash directly to the person who did the work. Use the calculator above for any percentage-based portion of the bill (e.g. taxis with a metered fare).

Movers tipping FAQ

Do I tip the foreman more than the rest of the crew?

No. Standard practice is to give each mover the same amount and hand it to them individually rather than to the foreman to distribute.

Should I offer the movers food and drinks?

Bottled water is expected on hot days and always appreciated. Buying lunch on a full-day move is a kind gesture but does not replace a cash tip.

Is the moving company's quoted price tip-inclusive?

Almost never. U.S. moving quotes cover labor, mileage, and materials, but tips are separate and go directly to the crew.

Can I tip with a card or app instead of cash?

Cash is strongly preferred — it goes directly to each mover. Some larger companies allow card tips on the invoice, but those can take days to distribute and may be reduced by processing fees.
